Malcolm Cowley May Day Poem 1935

"From factory gates and convict camps and cabins
Unpainted, windowless, deep in the Cotton Belt--
Tensed muscles loosening, a first free breath
A hundred million times repeated, felt

Then slowly heard, tornado of the mind
Driving the mist and terror from the head.
The vault of cloud was split by a sharp wind.
The sky was suddenly blue and the sun shone red."
